In 1950, The Land Reform Law of the People's Republic of China was formally adopted, with the aim of putting an end to the 'feudal expolitative' system of the ownership of land by the landlord class. Land would be redistributed to the peasants, who were then encouraged to form 'Mutual Aid Teams' to increase production by pooling resources such as land, machinery and labour. Cooperatives were introduced, with incentives provided to those who joined. Later stages involved higher level cooperatives which evened out disparities between rich and poor, and gave land ownership to larger units such as a village. By 1958 the collectivisation was advanced to the commune system.
