Mao Zedong, who held the title weida lingxiu (great leader,) chose Hua Guofeng to be his successor in 1976. In a meeting between the two men, Mao penned three notes to Hua: 'Take it easy, don't worry; 'Follow the principles of the past', and 'With you in charge, I am at ease.' When Mao died, Hua was given the title yingming lingxiu (wise leader) by an editorial in the People's Liberation Army Daily, after he had the Gang of Four arrested in a succesful coup.
