After Land Reform was completed in 1952, the new Collectivisation of Agriculture system was rolled out in stages in the countryside. Firstly, 'Mutual Aid Teams' were established, where peasants were encouraged to collaborate by pooling agricultural machinery, knowledge and resources to increase production and yields. Later on, land was incorporated into larger units and the joining of cooperatives was strongly advocated and incentivised. The government often made the sale of surplus grain to the state mandatory. While yields were initially divided according to both labour contributed and tools provided, in later stages revenue would be allocated based solely on labour.
