Xiang Xiuli was born into a poor family in Guangzhou in 1933. She was awarded the title of 'advanced worker' several times at the pharmaceutical factory where she was employed. In 1958 she heroically attempted to fight a chemical fire in the factory, was seriously burned and died a few days later. A campaign was later launched urging people to learn from the 'Xiang Xiuli Spirit'.
