Text by the cartoon figures lower-left corner reads: zichanjieji zhuanzheng (Dictatorship of the bourgeoisie).

The doctrine of the dictatorship of the proletariat on the basis of the theory of class struggle was formed by Marx. Mao expanded on these ideas, establishing theories of 'continuing the revolution under the dictatorship of the proletariat' and 'broadening the scope of class struggle', leading to, among others, the often-quoted statement concerning the power of the state, 'Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun'.

During the Cultural Revolution Mao called on the people to overthrow the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie, which he claimed had infiltrated the party. This idea formed his thesis of dui zichanjieji shixing quanmiande zhuanzheng (Exercise an all-round dictatorship over the bourgeoisie) - revelaed to the public in 1967 and hailed by Mao's followers as a milestone in the history of Marxist development.

Mao's overarching theory of 'continuing the revolution under the dictatorship of the proletariat' was criticised by Deng Xiaoping and eventually refuted offically in 1981, to be deleted from Mao Zedong Thought.
