Zhang Biwu was a self-taught painter who began his career at the age of 14 in Shanghai, where he worked as an apprentice at major printing houses producing calendars in the Shanghai yuefenpai advertising style. After the founding of the new China, Zhang's artwork began to focus primarily on martial themes, portraying heroic soldiers on the battlefield.

This particular poster was created from an original photograph by a Mongolian photographer named Namujile.
